?How does Hamlet present both an outward and inward conflict? Although Hamlet's flaws, melancholy, and pretended madness all lead to his inevitable downfall, the inward and outward conflicts of Man vs. Self, Man vs. Man and Man vs. Society (which arouse from Hamlet's acts of revenge for his father's death) ultimately play a key role as they are what trigger him to make most of the actions he commits which leads to the tragic downfall in Hamlet.I believe Shakespeare uses the character of Hamlet to present how one can become imprisoned by his own moral obligations and uncertainty in what he believes is right or wrong. Action and dramatic development within the play are both reliant on Hamlet’s internal conflict; whether he should avenge his father’s death, and even given the weighted responsibilities tied to the act, if he should instead take his own life. He is often lost within his own contemplations, and consequently procrastinates in taking action until he believes he knows all of the facts.The dramatic form allows Hamlet to open up to the audience in the form of soliloquies: â€Å"to be, or not to be- that is the question; whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer†¦Ã¢â‚¬  -Hamlet is torn between facing his harsh realities and simply giving in; therefore suggesting life itself is an internal battle, which can either be won or lost. However, outward conflicts such as religious obligations add to Hamlet’s uncertainty about what is right and wrong- i. e. a Christian will be damned if he/she commits suicide.Conflict is also presented in the play by differentiation of illusion and reality; Hamlet must define what separates truth from its superficial representations. For example, many of the characters are superficial and have different motives behind what they say. At the very beginning of the play the concept of illusion becomes apparent, as I believe Shakespeare uses the ghost of King Hamlet as a representation of illusion and realit y- i. e. is the ghost really there? Hamlet has to discern if the supernatural encounter is real or merely a product of his imagination.In Shakespearean time, a ghost represented a person caught between life and death due to unfinished business- using this theory I believe that Shakespeare uses the ghost to symbolise how one can become imprisoned by his own internal struggles. Another central inward conflict is Hamlet’s procrastination to act out his revenge on Claudius. This, together with Hamlet’s internal struggle to differentiate between illusion and reality, allows the audience to be empathetically concerned for Hamlet and side with him during physical conflict he encounters with other characters.I believe the outward conflict is therefore driven by Hamlet’s inward conflict and acts as a source of movement and drama in the play, as well as acting as a connection between the audience and Hamlet. The central conflict between Hamlet and Claudius begins internal ly, yet escalates to an external and physical conflict of pure hatred for one another that ultimately results in not only the loss of their own lives, but many of those around them: â€Å"No place, indeed, should murder sanctuaries, revenge should have no bounds†.This level of violence is an example of outward conflict as a means of expression, it provides a tangible connection with the emotions felt by those involved and the audience. This was particularly true for Elizabethan audiences who apparently enjoyed and responded well to violence. Outward conflict is generally carried out by manipulation of others throughout the play and is represented by words acting as poison being poured through the ears of others- a metaphor carried on from the act of Claudius poisoning the old King Hamlet.One can therefore argue that it is the manipulation of others that is the main source of conflict in Hamlet, rather than an internal conflict. As the play unfolds and becomes more dramatic, H amlet appears increasingly more mad, this structural idea suggests that as the drama increases, the more infested Hamlet is with his own internal problems and is therefore driven to perform rash actions (such as killing Polonius) by his own doings. The irregularities of action throughout the play represent Hamlet’s uncertainty and procrastination, as it prevents the play from advancing at a quick speed.In addition, I believe Shakespeare uses a ‘play within a play’ (the Mouse Trap) to emphasise the idea of imprisonment within one’s self. Using this idea however, another interpretation would be that Shakespeare is suggesting that it is Hamlet’s surroundings that are what drives his internal conflict, as he can’t escape the people of Denmark- he is the ‘play within the play’: â€Å"Denmark’s a prison†- this suggests that conflict stems from a situational crisis.Despite the fact that audiences may in some cases respond more to the physicality of outward conflict, the response itself as well as the outcomes, are really driven by internal struggle. The drama of the play is reliant on Hamlet’s procrastination to kill Claudius, along with his inability to discern illusion from reality and right from wrong. He is therfore blinded from reason, and part of his growth as a character is based on his ultimate resolution and fulfilment of these internal struggles.Furthermore he is finally able to resolve his external conflict with Claudius by avenging his father’s death. As an audience member, one is drawn in by Hamlet’s sensitivities and internal problems and is therefore able to empathise with and feel the impact of his final display of outward conflict with Claudius and Laertes. So to conclude, I believe without Hamlet’s internal struggle, the final and most dramatic scenes of the play would be far less powerful, and the play would perhaps have been a tragedy that fell short of a satisfying resolution.

The Exchange Theory which was put forward by Homans in 1971 suggests that when we are in a relationship, we keep an eye on what we are putting in and getting out of a relationship. It argues that whether ir not we are satisfied depends on the ratio of rewards and costs that are given within the relationship.If the person involved feels as though, for them, the rewards outweigh the costs, they will most likely feel satisfied with the relationship as they do not need to give as much, however, if the person involved feels like the costs outweighs the rewards, they will become dissatisfied with the relationship and this will result in them becoming likely to look elsewhere for ‘better offer’ and the previous relationship will breakdown.On the other hand, Equity Theory which was developed by Walster in 1978, does not argue that if the rewards outweigh the costs the person will be happy, but that when in a relationship, the people involved expect the relationship to be fair. Where Exchange Theory would say that people would leave a relationship as it is if they felt they were in the advantaged position where rewards are concerned, Equity theory says that the person would look to restore the equity within the relationship by either reducing their input or increasing their outputs.If this does not appear to work, it is likely that the relationship will breakdown as an equilibrium has not been reached. I think that the Equity Theory is a more convincing approach to the breakdown on relationships as most people in the 21st century, are more likely to try and ‘work it out’ if the relationship appeared to be in turmoil.It is true that if someone feels like they aren’t getting enough out of the relationship, then the relationship is more lik ely to break down, but this the Exchange Theory suggests that the relationship will breakdown straight away which is not true to reality as it is likely that the couple would discuss things before a decision is made on the future of the relationship. This is outlined in Duck’s theory. Also, the Exchange Theory suggests that humans are selfish as the theory seems to say that humans are fixated on getting the rewards from a relationship.In 1988, Duck demonstrated how a relationship should typically end. In order to do this, he developed a four stage model of dissolution. Stage one, the Intra-psychic phase, states that at least one member of the couple will start to feel unhappy and will start to focus on the behaviour of their partners. They will eventually reach the threshold and will voice their concerns. The second stage, the dyadic phase, states that the couple will take part in discussions and some may go to counselling; others may r ach the next threshold.This is the thir d stage, the social phase, where friends may offer support or take sides. It is this stage, according to Duck, where a break up is inevitable. The final stage is the grave dressing phase. This is when both people involved put across their opinion of what happened during the breakup and each partner will create their own version of who was to blame in the situation. This abuse began from a young age; people would refer to Coleman as lazy and disgusting and eventually she came to believe it. She desperately tried to SSE weight by eating nutritious meals and doing many different exercises. No matter how hard she tried, she was never able to silence the comments of others. As her efforts to be fit continued, people continued to ridicule her appearance. Colleens belief is that the bullying of fat people is not inborn. She believes that this bullying is taught by society. Just as children learn to be sensitive toward the disabled, the author believes that children should learn to have the same sensitivity toward the overweight. In addition, Neil Steinberg k, So Im Fat describes his experience with being overweight. What Steinberg finds most unpleasant about being overweight- besides the excess weight- is the offensive behavior of thin people. He takes offense to their behavior whether it is intentional or not, and is even bothered by their very existence. Stingers peers assumed that weight loss was beyond his grasp.. This behavior of a thin person bothered him since the hostess did not mind serving foods that werent suitable for herself. At this point he looked in the mirror and finally saw the man he had become. Both Coleman and Steinberg describe personal experiences with being overweight and the unfair treatment that comes along with it. They share the experience of obvious disdain displayed by thin people toward them. They both feel that the overweight are looked down upon and treated unfairly. They both reflect on the treatment of thin people towards them. Those who are thin made them feel inferior and Coleman and Steinberg despised it. Both these authors confronted themselves and realized that they had issues with their weight. Just like any other weakness or disability, obesity is an individuals exclusive issue. Therefore, this problem is not something to be made fun of. Just as it would be not be ridiculed. An overweight person has the personal choice of whether to do something about his weight or not and it is out of place for another to intervene.

I didnt even have to think before asking her if I could post it to The Essay Experts blog on Memorial Day.] The day was Monday, April 21, 2008. My phone rang just after 9pm. I checked the caller ID–it was my brother Nolan. Instinctively, I knew something was wrong, very wrong. My Dad had been in an accident and was being taken to a hospital about 20 miles north of my house. We didn’t know anything more. I quickly got dressed, jumped in my car, and hit the gas pedal. About 5 minutes later, my brother called again. Now Dad was being transported by helicopter to the much larger hospital just a few miles from my house. I got off the freeway and drove back the other way. My brother, sister-in-law, and I arrived at the hospital around the same time. The helicopter was still in flight, so we staked out seats in the busy emergency room to wait, still perplexed about what had happened to our Dad. After my stepmom and sister rushed in, we learned the whole story. My Dad usually came home from work around 5 or 6, so when it started to get dark and he still wasn’t home, my stepmom picked up the phone to make some increasingly frantic calls. My Dad was notorious for sporadically answering cell calls. As a contractor, he was constantly breaking and losing mobile phones. She wasn’t surprised when he didn’t answer, so she dialed his friends and clients. He had left the job site hours earlier, but no one knew where he was. My stepmom and sister decided to drive to the job site to look for him. They found his empty work truck on the side of the road with the driver’s side door open. They called 911 and nearby friends who could help with the search. There was a small creek parallel to the road with a steep bank covered in thick, muddy vegetation. My athletic sister charged down the hill and found him lying unconscious in the creek, pale and covered with dirt. The paramedics pulled him up on a rescue stretcher and loaded him into the helicopter. This process doesn’t take a few minutes, like it does on TV and in the movies. The rescue actually took more than an hour. The helicopter finally arrived, but still we knew nothing about his condition. We assumed it was a stroke, or something similar. When they finally let us in to see him, we discovered that he had suffered some sort of episode, possibly a seizure, and was experiencing pronounced weakness on one side of his body. It looked like a stroke, but he was stable. So they admitted him and scheduled an MRI for the next morning. The following day, the doctors confirmed that the MRI results showed that it looked like a stroke. We felt relieved. We knew a brain tumor would be a much more deadly diagnosis. But they still wanted to get a new MRI, with contrast, the next day to be sure. On Wednesday, April 23, 2008, our lives changed forever. The new MRI showed that it wasn’t a stroke–it was a brain tumor. They called in a neurosurgeon for a consultation. My education in neurology commenced that day. I carried a notebook at all times. I scribbled down details from the doctors during the day and did online research at night. Over the next 7 months, my Dad had a biopsy and was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Our doctor decided to treat with radiation and chemotherapy, not surgery. I knew that without surgery, the 6-month survival rate was almost zero. When I pressed him, he said he could do the surgery if we got a second opinion from one of the neurosurgeons he recommended. After many phone calls, I got an appointment with one of the top experts in the country at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. The neurosurgeon just needed to see my Dad’s (now enormous) medical file, along with all of his MRI results. We got his opinion, and my Dad had surgery to remove the tumor. Although the surgery was successful, he still needed radiation and chemo to stave off regrowth, which is incredibly common. I researched clinical trials and spoke to doctors at UCLA and UC San Francisco. My Dad didn’t qualify for any trials and his prognosis was grave. By September, the tumor was back, bigger than before. We tried some experimental chemo drugs, but nothing helped. My Dad wasted away before our eyes, until we finally called in hospice care in November. On December 3rd, the hospice nurse told us that the end was near, so we gathered together to say goodbye. We stayed up pretty late, but finally succumbed to our own fatigue and reluctantly went to bed. Just before 4:30am, I awoke suddenly and sat bolt upright. I went downstairs and the nurse told me she had just checked on my Dad–he was still hanging in there. When I went to his bedside, I touched his hands and face. I didn’t think he was breathing, so I woke up my stepmom, who had decided to take a quick nap just minutes before. He was gone. We all gathered around his bed and cried again. A week or so later, my sister Whitney and I, always the Daddy’s-Little-Girl types, decided to get tattoos to celebrate our Dad’s life. She got an elegant â€Å"W† and I got an infinity sign with a â€Å"W† in the middle. Worley forever. My Dad was never called to battle in Vietnam, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t fight a war. So on this Memorial Day, I remember all who have fallen in war, including the continuing war on cancer. ____________________ I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t been touched in some way by cancer.
