They are both defined as psychotic disorders in the latest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V). There are many similarities between schizophrenia  and  schizoaffective disorder, including the core  psychotic symptoms of hallucinations,  delusions, and disorganized thinking. There are also important differences, including the prominence of mood features, which is required for the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, but not for the diagnosis of schizophrenia.?? It is important to distinguish between the two because the prognosis is different, and treatment for the mood disorder symptoms is necessary for schizoaffective disorder, but might not be necessary for schizophrenia. Defining Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder With both of these psychotic disorders, hallucinations and delusions tend to occur. Hallucinations False sensory perceptions (hearing voices, seeing images, or feeling sensations that are not there) Delusions False beliefs (people are visiting through time travel or someone is secretly disguised as someone else) With both schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, the person who has the illness lacks insight into perceptual problems and false beliefs.?? For both conditions, the symptoms usually begin when a person is in his or her early 20s, and there may be a family history of the disease. Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a mental illness that causes severe psychotic symptoms that interfere with the ability to relate to others, to think clearly, to take care of ones self, to hold down a job, or even to be in touch with reality.?? It is usually difficult to interact with others due to psychotic symptoms. Besides psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, people with schizophrenia often have incoherent speech and disorganized behavior. They generally exhibit a flat affect (not showing much emotion) and tend to speak much less than average. Often, a person with schizophrenia has deficits in attention, memory, ability to process new information, and trouble with problem-solving.?? An Overview of Schizophrenia Schizoaffective Disorder Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health condition in which a person experiences psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia, such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, or flat affect, along with symptoms of a mood disorder, such as depression and/or mania.?? There are two types of schizoaffective disorder: Bipolar type: characterized by episodes of mania and major depressionDepressive type: characterized by episodes of major depression without mania What Is Schizoaffective Disorder? Subtle Differences Subtle  differences  in  symptoms  can help differentiate between the two disorders. For example, a person who has schizophrenia can become depressed or manic, but these mood disordered symptoms are not generally a prominent or persistent part of the condition.?? The time course, prognosis, and treatment also differ in small ways.   Important differences between schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder include the following. Schizophrenia Symptoms begin in early 20s Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, flat affect Chronic, persistent psychotic symptoms Schizoaffective Disorder Symptoms begin in early 20s Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, flat affect along with a mood disorder (depression or mania) Episodes of psychotic symptoms   Duration of Mood Episodes A person who has schizoaffective disorder is likely to experience severe mood symptoms accounting for more than half of the total duration of illness.?? On the other hand, a person who has schizophrenia may also experience mood episodes, but the total duration of the mood symptoms is brief compared to the duration of the psychotic symptoms. Duration of the  Psychotic Symptoms and the Disease The psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia tend to be persistent, while in schizoaffective disorder, they tend to come and go.?? In terms of the course of the disease, most people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia have a  chronic and persistent course of illness. On the other hand, most people diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder experience episodes of symptoms, and are more likely to have symptom-free intervals than people who have schizophrenia. However, this is not a hard and fast rule; in some people, the opposite is true. Relationship Between Mood Symptoms and Psychotic Symptoms In schizophrenia, mood symptoms are not expected to occur without psychotic symptoms. The psychotic symptoms are almost always present, but the mood symptoms come and go. In schizoaffective disorder, the psychotic symptoms may or may not be present during the times when a person is experiencing depression or mania.?? That said, the diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder requires that the psychotic symptoms be present for a long enough time (at least a couple of weeks) when a person is not experiencing any serious mood symptoms. Are You Experiencing Positive Psychotic Symptoms? Differences in Treatments The treatment of schizophrenia relies mostly on a special group of prescription medications called antipsychotics. These include older the older antipsychotic medications  haloperidol  and chlorpromazine, as well as newer medications,  risperidone, olanzapine, ziprasidone, quetiapine, asenapine, or lurasidone.?? Maintenance treatment for schizophrenia is almost always an antipsychotic medication. The treatment for the psychotic symptoms of schizoaffective disorder also includes antipsychotics. Paliperidone (invega), an atypical second generation antipsychotic, is the only medication that has the FDA approved indication to treat schizoaffective disorder, although all of the other antipsychotic medications are commonly used.?? People who have schizophrenia usually do not need to take mood stabilizers or antidepressants, but sometimes, these medications are needed in addition to antipsychotics. Everyone does it, so why wouldn’t you? There are several reasons why college students and students in general, cheat on exams and essays. Everybody does it. The most common reason of all. If your friend cheats, and his friend cheats, and the guy in the second row cheats, why would you bother to study and work hard? The lack of moral conviction in no way justifies cheating. However, the fact is that students use this mantra as an excuse for themselves. Information is free. The second most common excuse for cheating is that students don’t consider plagiarism wrong. The information is out there, it is available for everyone to reach it, and copying few words and sentences from a source is considered normal way of writing. Or in their words, patch writing. Students consider they are using one’s idea, and simply developing it, not copying it entirely. An easy way out. Survival instinct. Not everyone has the time and effort to get ready for a test. Sometimes, life gets in the way of studying. Several factors can influence the lack of time student are faced with. And in those situations, their survival instinct prevails over common sense. They know that it is wrong to cheat, but they see it as the only way to pass the test and come through. However, poor time management also plays a role here. Some students simply cannot anticipate how much time they need to finish a paper, and leave everything for later. Fear of failure. Last but not least, some students simply don’t have the required confidence to write a good essay, paper or take the test. They consider their writing abilities inadequate. These small leaves are persistent, decussate, less than 1/2 inch and can be prickly on some species. Cedar bark is often reddish, peeling and vertically furrowed. When considering both our native cedars and old world cedar, bark identification  should be confirmed by using other botanical characteristics. Cedars have cones that can be variable in size, some are woody while others are more fleshy and berry-like. The cones can be oblong to bell-shaped to rounded but typically are less than one inch in size.

Breaking Into Features Tired of the â€Å"1,000 words for $5† markets? Break out of them and into writing features. Editors pay good money for excellent writing. All it takes is solid ideas and unique angles. FEATURES AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Hard news is a magnifying glass, and features are an aerial view (i.e. CAR ACCIDENT CLAIMS 5 vs. CAR ACCIDENT VICTIMS SPEAK OUT). They present a different look at a topic with a unique spin. Word count varies, from 500 to 5,000 words, and there are many types. Interview pieces, profiles, how-to pieces and testimonials are all features. Your main market will be magazines (print and online), so your first step is research. As a practice exercise, pick out a feature piece and familiarize yourself with the topic, the content, the general style of the author and publication, the side-bars as well as the ads on the page accompanying it. Deconstructing another piece is a great way to learn to find out what makes a feature tick, or doesnt. When pitching, keep it to the point. Pitches should run no more than 250-700 words. An editor wants to know what you want to cover, how you want to cover it (including the facts and numbers!) and why you should be the writer to do it. Spell-check before hitting send (nothing worse than ending with kind retards), and learn the editors name and general style of the publication before you pitch. The writers guidelines, which are usually on the publications website or can be requested from the editor, should tell you everything you need to know. Don’t overdo it, and avoid trying to be â€Å"fancy†. Samples and ideas should speak for you. If you impress the editor, you’ll receive a brief, including your word count, rate (usually per word, and always better than a â€Å"content mill†), topic and deadline. Make sure that you and the editor are on the same page. Get everything in writing before you start. If you aren’t sure, ask! THE PROCESS My first feature was for the Afrikaans women’s magazine Vrouekeur (on endometriosis, an important topic for readers), and it was the first time I paid the rent with my writing. I pitched everywhere until I got it right, and when I did, writing was finally worth something. No more content mills! I went on to write many more features – including for Moneyweb, The Investor, People Magazine SA and Writers Write. The writing process differs, but here’s what works for me:   Ã‚     Pre-search Do your research first. Who can you interview, quote and source? Make sure your sources are reliable; cross-reference facts. Double-checking now is always better than an apology later.   Ã‚     Pitch Tell the editor more about you and your idea. Include examples, research and consider the famedâ€Å"Five W’s (and one H).   Ã‚     Putting it together Start off with an introduction that grabs the reader, then lead into the body. Stick to the word count; make sure it flows.   Ã‚     To the editor Send it to the editor who believed in it. Your article could be rejected, sent back for changes or accepted. Once your article gets accepted for publication, you can send your invoice. Congrats!
